An illustrated evening talk by tank historian David Fletcher “Camouflage and armoured vehicles”: May 15th

Camouflage tankCamouflage has had an astonishing impact on the art and design of the twentieth century. As a concept it was inspired by nature and applied to everything from soldier’s uniforms to ships and armoured vehicles.

In this one off special talk David Fletcher asks whether, in reality, there is much point in camouflaging something that makes so much noise and moves around in a cloud of exhaust smoke.

Starting with the First World War to introduce the subject, David will discuss the ideas tried out in the inter-war years and then move onto World War Two and concluding with a look at more recent techniques.

David Fletcher

After a first visit to the Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset in the early 1960s David developed quite a serious interest in tanks and armoured vehicles and from then onwards spent a lot of his spare time at the museum.

David gained a full time position at the Tank Museum in April 1982 and should have retired last Christmas but is still working. Over the last 26 years David has run the shop, been librarian, curator and is currently working as the Museum’s historian. David has written a number of books and magazine articles and has appeared on a variety of television programmes. He says that whenever he can get away from the Museum he likes to travel all around the country giving talks.
