Exploring the development of camouflage from its origins in nature, to its militarisation and then its impact on contemporary fashion and design, the temporary exhibition at The Gordon Highlanders Museum provides a focal point for the year of themed events.

The exhibition uses specimens from Aberdeen University’s natural history department to illustrate how plants and animals conceal themselves or deceive predators. A diverse array of camouflage jackets from the Imperial War Museum demonstrates the international evolution of camouflage print through the 20th century.

Film footage of Second World War DIY camouflage training runs alongside a spectacular collection of couture camouflage garments created especially for the exhibition by 3rd year textile students from Gray’s School of Art. These pieces interpret the camouflage theme through digital print, woven fabric and creative textile techniques that exemplify why designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier draw inspiration from camouflage. Fit for any catwalk or boutique, the students works are displayed next to everyday high street camouflage products.

Twenty 3rd year textile students from Gray’s School of Art responded to the camouflage brief by drawing inspiration from the three camouflage strands – nature, military and urban. Creating their own camouflage print, fabrics and designs, an inspirational collection of couture garments has been created with the assistance of Aberdeen-based fashion designer, Isabelle Randall. Six pieces were selected for display at The Gordon Highlanders Museum and will be on show from April – October. The whole collection will be showcased in the Bon Accord Centre on April 17th.

Iona Crawford[link]

Iona Crawford ©2008As a first class fashion design graduate from Edinburgh College of Art, Iona launched her fashion and textiles business, ‘Iona Crawford’, in October 2007. By combining rich luxurious Scottish fabrics such as cashmere, leather and pure new wool with unusual, unexpected materials such as regenerated fertilizer bags and DPM (disruptive pattern material) military gear, Iona challenges and modernises the way in which Scottish fabrics are traditionally recognised. It is this unique and innovative approach that gives Iona’s design practice its niche. www.ionacrawford.com

Isabelle Randall - Camouflage Jacket ©2008Aberdeen based fashion designer, Isabelle Randall takes the concept of camouflage and concealment, and inverts it. Exposing what would normally remain unseen, Randall creates a contemporary camouflage garment using actual desert combat kit, and reveals its structure and construction. Her work is show at The Gordon Highlanders Museum for the duration of the exhibition. Randall was commissioned to support the 3rd year students in the final stages of their garment construction for this project.

Exploring the concept of deception and disguise, designer and florist, Sarah Lakin, takes the nature theme to a new level with her wrapped furnishings – coat stands, chairs, cushions and lampshades come to life with her quirky foliage, flowers and grasses. Camouflage meets kitsch!
